Families Saludables

The Morgan Jayne Children’s Foundation supports Families Saludables (or Healthy Families in English) which is a non-profit, non-denominational organization devoted to fighting the AIDS epidemic on Roatan. All of Families Saludables services are free of charge and staffed mainly with volunteers, both local and international. Since the organization depends almost entirely on donations from The Morgan Jayne’s Children Foundation, the following lists have been prepared for those who might wish to contribute. These are guidelines only and the list is by no means comprehensive.

Mother - to - Infant Transmission

The major focus of Families Saludables is on reducing the incidence of mother-to-child transmission of the HIV virus both at birth and via breast milk. Their work includes running testing clinics for pregnant women, assigning trained home visitors for mothers living with HIV/AIDS, providing palliative services and providing infant formula, medications, and a host of supplies to families struggling to cope with this disease.

Recognition

Charmont Bilingual Academy and Families Saludables Director Valerie Nelson has been recognized for her work on Roatan and was one of 49 Canadian citizens to receive the honorable Meritorious Service Award in 2017.
